Classic Designs: Why they have an appeal

There is a certain essence surrounding clothing that has been names a historical classic. We are seeing them more and more in our daily lives, as the younger generations are reliving classic styles and bringing them back with a modern twist.

From low rise jeans, to baby tees, to the all-American Varsity jacket, these classic designs are always making themselves known in new and appealing ways. There has to a reason why certain items are constantly reoccurring, the question is, is why?

Why classic designs have their appeal

The cycle of nostalgia keeps on going round as people are highly influenced by music and films and the overall desire to feel the novelty of certain things they love. Take for instance, someone loves an early 2000’s film that captures the novelty of the early 2000’s and the way people dressed. If all the films you watch represent this style you, in time, will want to match it. This is how trends tend to start. One person wears it, another is influenced and so on. Designers then catch onto this trend and again, another will be influenced until it’s a full movement.

There is also the obvious pop culture influence. It has been a recurring theme for tv shows to be set in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s which gives a new generation of people a look into styles they’ve never seen but in full definition of modern cameras. This then filters its way into the fashion industry as it has always been a trend that people like wearing music and movie merch.

Practicality comes into play as well. The current trend may be a fashion style that is tight and restrictive meanwhile the style they’re reminiscing about is free flowing and provides comfort and style, so they bring it back. Or someone may question, how come everyone in the 70’s was wearing heeled boots? The going into a deep dive into 70’s boots and finding that they were comfy (depending on the style) and therefore the hunt for this style shoe is on as modern ones are not designed right and hurt.

Trend cycles

In the modern age of social media and video trends, trend cycles have accelerated. New styles go in and out faster than some people can keep up. However, the iconic classic styles are remaining throughout these trend cycles. As a staple piece usually.

We are seeing trend like the early 2000’s coming thick and fast through Y2K trends. From music videos to movie characters, even Genz are now remembering wearing these clothing trends due to the fast nature of trend cycles and how they are recurring earlier now. The internet has a part to play in this as many can access what a style looked like in a mere few seconds in a google search.

Emotional connections

In some cases, there are emotional ties to a style. It may be passed down by a family member and this staple item is your way of feeling connected to your family. Whether this is on a daily basis or whether you’re trying to recreate an old photo someone else took. You may find it will become your new style.

Fashion and emotions do go hand in hand. There is a reason we choose to wear what we do. Whether it’s because we have a certain taste in music or its because we’re cold and want something soft and thick on. Fashion at the end of the day is a form of non-verbal communication.

The timeless appeal of classic designs will stand the test of time as their aesthetic value will only grow as time goes on.

In an age where everything is a redesign or a copy, wearing something that was a first and was once an innovation will actually make you stand out in the world. This also applies to the quality aspect of certain items. Craftmanship is a dying art so when someone comes across a classic design still being made how it once was, it instantly makes it a standout piece. That can be found in thrift shops if that is your desired way of shopping as it will still be in a condition worth buying even years and wears later.
